Lesson Six – Vehicle Building

This design technology teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to construct and test a toy vehicle that includes a movement mechanism produced by combining different materials. The children can evaluate their completed toy vehicles against the selected success criteria and suggest improvements to their designs.

Learning Objectives

Assemble, join and combine different  materials and components. Identify how mechanisms can be used in different ways.

Learning Outcomes

I can select and join materials to make a model of something. I can use materials to make a mechanism of wheels and an axle.

Vehicle Building

Teaching sequence to help the children construct and test a toy vehicle that includes a movement mechanism produced by combining different materials

Vehicle Materials

Display posters for whole class discussion to help the children identify the best materials to use for parts of a toy vehicle that includes a movement mechanism

Vehicle Testing

Template to help the children test and evaluate a model of a vehicle that includes a movement mechanism

Vehicle Building

Interactive activity to help the children construct and test a toy vehicle that includes a movement mechanism produced by combining different materials

  • Shape Matching
Identify, describe and compare different 2D shapes by their matching individual properties including the number of sides, vertices and lines of symmetry
  • Shape Changes
Explore and illustrate how to make patterns of 2D shapes by changing their size and position
  • Shape Patterns
Identify and describe some of the patterns that can be made using different sequences of 2D shapes
  • Shape Groups
Select and group sets of different 2D shapes by their matching vertical lines of symmetry
