This teaching pack includes five lessons to teach the class to investigate, compare and record the place value of the numerals in different six digit numbers. There are activities for shared, independent and group learning.

This scheme of work for maths is recommended for Year Five in Key Stage Two although it could also be easily differentiated for children in other ages and classes to use.

Lesson One : Thousands Digits

Lesson Two : Number Mix

Build five digit numbers by combining tens of thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. The class can identify the value of the digits in the selected numbers using the combined ones, tens, hundreds and thousands.

Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1000000 and determine the value of each digit. Identify the place value of digits in numbers to thousands.

Lesson Three : Hundreds of Thousands

Identify and compare the place value of digits in numbers to hundreds of thousands. The class can also practise ordering the numbers that they have generated according to the value and position of their digits.

Learning Objectives
Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit. Count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1,000,000.
Learning Outcomes
I can read, write and order numbers to hundreds of thousands by the place value of the digits. I can count in powers of ten from different numbers.

Lesson Four : Family Journeys

Order numbers to six digits according to the position and value of the numerals. The class can record how to compare pairs of the ordered numbers using the correct symbols for greater than or less than.

Order and compare numbers to at least 1 000 000 and determine the value of each digit. Count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10.

Lesson Five : Six Digits

Compare and order different six digit numbers by the place value of their numerical digits. The class can build different numbers using combinations of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands to record in words and digits and then order from smallest to biggest.
