Key Stage Two : Maths : Number : Equivalent Fractions

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to practise using diagrams to model, compare and record examples of matching equivalent fractions for different unit and non-unit fractions. The class can show the numerators and denominators that can match different fractions for a range of halves, quarters, thirds, eighths and twelfths.

This teaching pack includes five lessons to teach the class to practise using diagrams to model, compare and record examples of matching equivalent fractions. There are activities for shared, independent and group learning.
This scheme of work for maths is recommended for Year Three in Key Stage Two although it could also be easily differentiated for children in other ages and classes to use.
Skills covered in this teaching pack include using diagrams to illustrate different fractions, identifying equivalent fractions for halves, quarters and thirds and recording numerators and denominators for matched equivalent fractions.
Lesson One : Fraction Match
Use diagrams to model equivalent fractions using halves, quarters and eighths. Some children can be supported by getting them to use concrete equipment to illustrate the matched equivalent fractions.
Learning Objectives
Recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators. Recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects.
Learning Outcomes
I can use diagrams to show equivalent halves, quarters and eighths. I can divide a set of objects to match equivalent fractions.
Teaching Resource Files
Lesson plan fraction match Activity fraction match core, support (colour, black and white) Presentation what fractions Presentation fraction match
Lesson Two : Fraction Thirds
Identify and record different fractions that are equivalent to one third. The class can also record other examples of fractions that are not equivalent to one third.
Learning Objectives
Recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators. Recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects.
Learning Outcomes
I can use diagrams to show fractions equivalent to one third. I can divide a set of objects to match equivalent fractions.
Teaching Resource Files
Lesson plan fraction thirds Activity fraction thirds cards core, support (colour, black and white) Presentation quarters Presentation fraction thirds
Lesson Three : Fraction Lines
Identify and record equivalent fractions by using a number line and matching diagrams. The children can divide shapes to build their equivalent fraction number lines.
Learning Objectives
Recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators. Compare and order non-unit fractions for twelfths and eighths.
Learning Outcomes
I can use diagrams to indicate fractions that are equivalent to twelfths and eighths. I can order non-unit fractions for twelfths and eighths.
Teaching Resource Files
Lesson plan fraction lines Activity fraction line eighths cards (colour, black and white) Activity fraction line twelfths cards (colour, black and white) Presentation thirds Presentations fraction lines
Lesson Four : Fraction Walls
Record matching sets of equivalent fractions by using and dividing diagrams. The class can compare numerators and denominators to find matching equivalent fractions.
Learning Objectives
Recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators. Compare non-unit fractions by the value of the numerators and denominators.
Learning Outcomes
I can use diagrams to indicate fractions that are equivalent to other fractions. I can compare the value of numbers in equivalent fractions.
Teaching Resource Files
Lesson plan fraction walls Activity fraction walls core, support (colour, black and white) Presentation fraction match Presentation fraction walls
Lesson Five : Fraction Numbers
Record numerators and denominators that are equivalent to non-unit fractions. The children can show how fractions are equivalent by dividing shapes.
Learning Objectives
Recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators. Compare non-unit fractions by the value of the numerators and denominators.
Learning Outcomes
I can use diagrams to indicate fractions that are equivalent to other fractions. I can explain the value of numbers in equivalent fractions.
Teaching Resource Files
