This teaching pack includes five lessons to teach the class to explore the structure of alphabetically ordered texts using encyclopaedias. There are activities for shared, independent and group learning.

This scheme of work for English is recommended for Year Three in Key Stage Two although it could also be easily differentiated for children in other ages and classes to use.

Lesson One : Prefixes and Roots

Lesson Two : Word Definitions

Identify and record the meanings of different words that can be used to describe animals. The children can practise using dictionaries to check their listed definitions of each word.
